Dočekali smo i to, koncert može početi svake sekunde, bolovi u nogama i leđima odjednom prestaju i svi spremno očekujemo početak.

Nakon Simpatije uslijedila je »It’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll (But I Like It)«.

Napokon odmor. Mislim si kako ću ovako blatan pred ljude.

It's only mud, waiting and rock'n'roll, but we like it

After 22 years, accompanied by the guitar teacher Adela Skrilecz (she was born in Bjelovar but lives in Graz) and the renown Bjelovar record collector Josip Crnković Fox, and joined for the first time by Austrian Ursula Bauer, we have returned to »the scene of the crime« where about a hundred thousand rock'n'rollers of all generations from the whole region gathered to enjoy the legendary hits of the timeless Rolling Stones on the »No Filter« tour.

The three of us were a part of the team that in August of 1995 went to Austria, to the place Spielberg near Zeltweg, where just like the last Saturday a Rolling Stones concert was also held during the »Voodoo Lounge« tour. At that long ago occasion we went with two cars, of which one broke down immediately after crossing the Slovenian-Austrian border, we traveled by one car in several installments, used also taxi services, got lost, enjoyed the concert, gathered together again, slept on the meadow. Traveled home again in installments and used hitch-hiking methods. Just like that time, this concert too had its little technical glitches, but this time the failure was not in transportation but in accreditation, the press ticket, which was approved on July 17th and confirmed on Monday September 11th, to be for reasons unknown to me canceled on September 13th by e-mail which I have, of course, with appropriate amazement read through in the press center on the day of the show. We all agreed that it is the curse of the Rolling Stones. Luckily there were tickets still available for sale legally, since last-minute tickets from the scalpers reach astronomical amounts, which would not be reachable on my budget.

I purchased the ticket but then the most strenuous part was on – the waiting. First we had to wait from 11:00 to 15:00 to be let into the field. We decided to waste our time by one of the numerous stands offering Coca Cola, mineral water and draught beer. Girls got hungry and devoured some sort of hamburgers, while Fox and me kept to the rule we made up on the spot – less food and drink meant less usage of the ecological toilets, where it's always crowded.

At 15:00 sharp, the entrances opened and we got on the field, not without yet another minor glitch. I was carrying a compact camera, which according to the instructions I got during my e-mail exchanges concerning the press ticket was allowed. However, during the frisking the security guy stops me – cameras are not allowed. I showed him the e-mail, he still does not let me in, says he's got to check it. We await with trepidation, and after a while the security guard returns, apologizes and lets us in.

We are finally on the field which is after effluent rainfall a true mud wallow. We go to relieve ourselves one last time. We are now into the six-and-a-half hours of waiting, which we while away standing up, watching a stream of people pouring into the field. The concert is due at 20:30. Time passes by with two opening acts; around 17:00 the stage is taken by John Lee Hooker junior, son of the late legendary bluesman. After junior did his thing for about an hour, and after a break, around 19:00 the stage is taken by the boys from the Icelandic band Kaleo. Both opening acts were very good, which is no wonder, since – as we commented later – Stones would not drag out some nincompoops to play with the feeling of a hundred thousand attendees.

Shortly before 20:30 the lights go out, video pillars take on a yellow color, with red tongues sticking out. We are finally there, the concert is due to begin any second, the pain in our legs and backs vanishes and we are ready for the start.

It qould not be The Rolling Stones if they weren't a bit late. That »bit« turned out to be fifteen long minutes. And finally all the lights go out, black video pillars turn a red as dark as blood, and from the speakers we hear the first bars of the legendary Sympathy for the Devil. Mick Jagger and co. get out on the stage. Special ovations from the public greet the timeless Keith Richards when his face appears on the videowall, lighting up a cigarette. After the opening song, the next one was It's Only Rock'n'roll (But I Like It); they played for more than two hours, their old hits with a couple of songs from the last album. Those two long hours went by in a whisk. The regular part of the show ended with Satisfaction, the encore being two songs – Gimmie Shelter and Jumpin' Jack Flash which concluded with fireworks.

The long way home was awaiting. Exiting the field proved strenuous through the prevailing mud, full of obstacles consisting of overturned benches invisible in the dark. After about an hour of emerging we reach the car. Finally some rest. It was another two hours before we started towards Graz, which we reached at 4 in the morning. There I take my car and go off to Bjelovar alone. Stopping at a petrol station to use the toilet, I am thinking what a sight I must be, all muddy and unpresentable. However, everybody else using the station is also muddy. We just give each other thumbs-up mouthing a simple expression – »it was great«. With a couple more stops and naps in parking lots, I reach Bjelovar at nine in the morning.

What else is there to say? It was a great Saturday spent with dear people, culminating in the greatest show given that evening on the planet Earth.
